Barga celebrates the beginning of May and Spring with the traditional Medieval “Calendimaggio” o Cantar Maggi, one of the most important historical events of the season. The origins of the Calendimaggio festival are to be found among the ancient customs of many different peoples, but especially in the Roman celebrations known as the “Fasti di Maggio” and in the medieval tradition of celebrating the arrival of Spring in early May (Kalende di Maggio). Over 150 participants dressed in Medieval costume will arrive at the historical centre from all over Italy to take part in this fascinating exhibition of colour, tradition and history organised in collaboration with the Historica Lucense Association of Lucca. A walk back in time to the Middle-Ages.
The splendid grounds of the Cathedral will be the evocative setting for the annual crossbow championship which starts at 09,30 am and goes on all afternoon. At 10 am the drummers of the Contrade di San Paolino di Lucca Association will play along the narrow winding streets of the town while at 3 pm you can admire the historical cortege from the Town Hall to the Cathedral.
On the same day you can wander around the monthly antique market and admire the various stalls with antiques and handmade items and taste typical local products.
