The 26th edition of BargaJazz Festival is ready to kick off, and it will be offering amusing performances where jazz meets other genres of traditional music. This year, BargaJazz pays homage to the Italian saxophonist Pietro Tonolo, who has always participated and supported the festival. He took part of the BargaJazz orchestra in 1986 and then became member of the jury and finally participated as guest artist. Nowadays, Tonolo is one of the most notorious and internationally renowned Italian jazz artists.
As a soloist, Tonolo will accompany the BargaJazz Orchestra (which is directed by Mario Raja this year) during all the time of the Music Arrangement and Composition Contests.
The songs submitted for the Music Arrangement Contest are inspired by Tonolo’s music and will be presented on 23rd and 24th August at 9.30pm at the Theatre of the Differenti in Barga. On 21st August, Tonolo himself will be the protagonist of a concert presenting a new original music project in collaboration with violinist Sonig Tchakerian and pianist Paolo Birro which will merge different genres of music with a capital ‘M’.
The peculiarity of this year’s edition is the crossing and mixture of jazz, folk and ethnic music, and even the combination with other forms of art. The latter aspect will especially be shown in the event “Impermanence Dance Theater” held on 22nd August: this is a project focused on music improvisation and dance to the music of the great jazz artist from Garfagnana Nicolao Valiensi.
There is more news for the festival this year: on 30th August, BargaJazz will host the concert “7modi”, by Cocco Cantini and Antonello Salis, as part of the European project “Sonata di Mare”. This will be an interesting project in collaboration with a group of Corsican polyphonic singers.
The festival programme, longer than usual, will start on 17th August with Stefano Omnorati Trio plus Francesco Bearzatti and will end on 31st August with “Barga Out Jazz…Enojazz Night…”.
This last event is a sort of by-night version of BargaINJazz where visitors will be able to enjoy concerts throughout the town with the opportunity of tasting wines from Lucca.
On 18th August there will be again the traditional event “BargaINJazz” form 5pm which will bring music through the streets and squares of the old centre of Barga. Music will be performed by street band Magiaboola Brass Band and other jazz ensembles.
Among other important dates, we remind you the Eno Jazz evenings, the series of regular post-concert meetings which will be held at Hotel Villa Libano, re-opened for the occasion after years of closure.
