Italian Cultural Events

-

The autumn programme of the Italian Cultural Institute is packed full of important events. The Italian Art Exhibition from the Royal Collection – this time focusing on the baroque period – will open on November 23 and run until March 8 2009 at the Queen’s Gallery in Edinburgh.
Given the success of the first part of the exhibition (on Renaissance art) the prospect of being able to view works by such masters as Domenichino, Carracci, and especially Caravaggio, seems certain to attract just as many, if not more visitors this time round.
Special attention should also be given to the eighth edition of Italian Language week which has as its theme this year “L’Italiano in Piazza”. A series of initiatives is planned – everything from academic gatherings to entertainment events, including the hosting of a special day at Edinburgh University designed to encourage young people in their interest in, and love of, all things Italian.
Taking place on October 22 at the University’s Potterow there will be a special Italian food event – assisted by our friends in the catering business; there will be music from the group “Sangue Vivo” and a special raffle with prizes highlighting the rich vein of Italian creativity and techonology. The top prize will be an Aprilia motorbike, generously donated by Sonsub Ltd of Aberdeen.
As a sign of the continued commitment of the Institute towards the study of Italian in Scotland’s Universities, and in the context of Italian Language Week, there will be a special awards ceremony on October 6. The new “Scottish University Premio Italia” will be awarded to Glasgow University student Megan McCluskie for her thesis on the theme: “To what extent does Rossellini’s Roma Citta’ Aperta provide an accurate representation of the Resistance in Rome?” A measure of the importance of this initiative is that the prizes will be awarded by His Excellency Giancarlo Aragona, the Ambassador of Italy to the UK.
