My tastes from Italy: Toscana

TOSCANA Tra compositori e poeti Tuscany is my adopted region. I live between Lucca, on a hill overlooking the town, and Garfagnana (Serchio Valley) on the mountain of Barga in a restored stone house in the forest. Lucca is an artistic town, closed by a ring of medieval walls, on which people walk or sit in the shadow of centuries old plane trees. Here the great lyric composer Giacomo Puccini was born, and every year, in summer, his operas are performed in Torre del Lago Puccini, the village where Puccini lived. In a open theatre on the lake listening to La Bohème in the sunset is an almost mystical experience. Instead, of Barga fascinates me the landscape between the mountains and its artistic vitality, first of all the of the repertoire of the famous poet Giovanni Pascoli and the international festival Jazz ruled every august. Positioned between Lucca and the Garfagnana, Barga is one of the most beautiful villages in…

My tastes from Italy: Veneto & Emilia Romagna

VENETO In Veneto there is the most precious jewel of Italy: Venice. A magic moment to visit Venice is during the carnival in February, when hundreds of the inhabitants put on eighteenth century costumes, cover their faces with masks, and parade around the town, disappearing in the “calli” (little pedestrians streets) or along the foggy channels. The People of Veneto love to drink good wine, especially white, during the day, instead of the classic coffee. Go to a wine bar and ask for an “ombra de vin”. This means “a shadow of Prosecco wine”, and comes from a sixteenth-century tradition of drinking under the shadow of the San Marco bell tower. I went to Venice for the “Festa del Redentore” . I was on a friend’s boat, from sunset to sunrise. We sailed the lagoon, along with another hundred boats full of people eating and drinking. We stopped in Canal Grande to eat sardelle in saor, waiting for the marvellous…

My tastes from Italy: Veneto & Emilia Romagna

My tastes from Italy: Piemonte & Valle d’Aosta
