La voce di Barga

The Voices of Barga: buildings, paintings and history.

Inspired by a visit to Barga in May of this year, writer and writing tutor, Linda Jackson arrived back in Glasgow to plan her return…but this time with seven other writers from Scotland.

‘I couldn’t keep that to myself’ says Linda who has been supporting creative writers for many years, both as an editor and a tutor.

‘There is such beauty and there are intriguing narratives and histories on every path of both the old and the new towns and those who are joining me here are well-versed in letting their imaginations fly free over history and place’.

Linda has a full programme ahead from writing about travel and the ‘journey’ here, writing inspired by the works in the many Art Galleries in Old Barga to revisiting the poems of Giovanni Pascoli and writing to the objects of his home. The photography of Caterina Salvi has been a focus of this writing workshop focussing on essence and what is left of a person in objects/houses. Linda’s own poetry collection, The Cabinet, which was published by Red Squirrel Press in Scotland last year was precisely about the items/gifts in her late mother’s display cabinet.

The items of la Casa Pascoli will be the focus this time for all the writers.

Diana Devlin is an Italian/Scot living in Gallicano and a well-published poet. Diana will tutor one of the workshops on ‘A Place for Poetry’; there will also be a tour of La Villa Ricci to re-imagine family histories and use will be made of an ornate room, as a writing space in the villa, to reflect on the histories of the house itself. ‘If homes could talk, what would they reveal?’ Linda is keen to have the writers perhaps give a narrative voice to the structures themselves.

The group will enjoy the charms of the Villa Gherardi and hopefully some open-air readings of the work as it begins to take shape – assuming the rain goes off!

Linda Jackson is the founding editor of the independent publisher, www.seahorsepublications.com and is hopeful that there will be a small book from this trip. Now all she needs is an Italian translator when the book is ready?

We will update on the trip and its outcomes shortly.
